The University of Taubaté (UNITAU) has worked for 55 years in Higher Education so far, having originated from the merging of eight higher education institutions in the city of Taubaté: Faculty of Philosophy, Sciences and Letters (the precursor course, founded in 1956), Federation of Schools, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Economics and Business Administration - Prof. Vieira Ulysses, School of Engineering, Faculty of Social Service and School of Physical Education and Sports, whose leaders had already foreseen the need for an academic center in the city, located in the privileged area between the capital cities of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, in the Southeast of Brazil. Its official foundation takes place in 1974, after the signature of Municipal Law no 1498, when it achieves the status of University, but its effective beginning with the name of the University of Taubaté takes place in 1976.
